LANNA MANTRA - CHIANG MAI

This new hotel, still going through its teething period, is a gem of a hideaway just north of the Chiang Mai superhighway. Its selling point is the quiet location right on the bank of the Ping River.

When owner Busabong Preechanonda saw the two and a half rai plot of land for sale, she immediately had visions of creating a manageable boutique hotel. "Chiang Mai has such great potential as a tourist destination, with a wealth of culture that is unique. I also believe Thais now appreciate travel as one of life's sweeteners."

She sold her own house nearby, bought the land, and build a cluster of two-storey structures that house 30 rooms, ranging from standard, superior to deluxe and junior suite.

"I would categorise it as a relais hotel, a retreat where you can relax and unwind," said Busabong, who supervised the construction with a total hands-on approach, living on the property, watching each nail go in, and even picking up hammers and paintbrushes when extra hands were needed.

Despite being a new hotel, the gardens are fully grown and lush. "We didn't cut the old trees, and put a lot of thought into the landscaping, with an emphasis on local fragrant flowering bushes," she explained proudly.

The rooms are tastefully furnished in wood and cotton, with a choice of traditional or modern Thai style decor. The rack rates range from 3,500 baht to 7,000 baht.
